And-over-n-out
It's July 11, 1962, and the future is about to get closer than ever before. And part of it happens right here in Andover, Maine! Today's Sunday Drive is all about Telstar 1, the very first ever telecommunication satellite. From Andover, the very first television broadcast from America to Europe takes place, as the Andover Earth Station, a ground antenna manufactured by AT&T and Bell Laboratories successfully captures a recording of the U.S. flag flying just outside the facility and relays it to England and France via the Telstar satellite. A few years later in 1968, neighboring Bethel's new high school was honorarily named "Telstar."
The Sunday Drive is a series of Anvil Falls comics that highlights a Maine community every Sunday. An excerpt from the community's history - or an anecdote about what makes the town unique - is related with a limerick and illustration. Our goal is to highlight every single town and city in the entire state. The first volume will cover all of Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties, and is set to release in area stores later this year.
