Shame Game
Today's Sundy Drive is all about Greene, Maine, which was home to prodigious inventor Leonard Norcross, who patented handy tools like the threshing machine and the nail-maker. Norcross is most famous for inventing the first functional diving suit, in 1834 - unfortunate timing for Leonard's son, Girard, who was born the same year. In honor of his successful invention, Norcross chose the first name "Submarinus" for his baby. Not surprisingly, his son chose to go with his middle name, as most records indicate "S. Girard Norcross."
Are you a middle-namer? If so, just remember that if your first name leaves you wishing it was "John" or "Steve," consider that it could always be worse!
The Sunday Drive is a series of Anvil Falls comics that highlights a Maine community every Sunday. An excerpt from the community's history - or an anecdote about what makes the town unique - is related with a limerick and illustration. Our goal is to highlight every single town and city in the entire state. The first volume will cover all of Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties, and is set to release in area stores later this year.
